Abstract

In this study, we designed and verified a computer-controlled caloric stimulation device for delivering caloric stimulation in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) environment. The stimulation device consists of a caloric stimulation generation unit and a control unit. The control system unit includes a microcontroller module which can process stimulation command written in LabVIEW, and then transfer the stimulation sequence to a digital PID temperature control module to achieve exact caloric stimulation via a small peltier-pod. The performance of the device was evaluated with caloric stimulation fMRI experiments, and the results from 5 test subjects demonstrated the reliability of the device.
